The Accidental Best Seller

In a recent article - http://t.co/OuD1FLO - Lynn Serafinn says, “If your book sales are amongst the Top 100 in any category on Amazon, you are technically a “bestseller.” You don’t have to be in the Top 100 of all books. There are dozens of categories and sub-categories on Amazon, and if you achieve a sales ranking in the Top 100 in any of these, you can say you are a bestseller.”

Yehhhh! According to this criterion, I’m already an Amazon Best-Seller with no less than three of my books hitting the lists - well at least in the UK - and I didn’t even know.

The only problem is no one else knows either… My grocer won't accept it, my car is still a wreck, I'm still broke...

This best-selling stuff isn't what they make it out to be... I think someone is kidding me...

I wish it meant my coffers overfloweth, but someone forgot to tell the bank manager...

The Amazon category-ranking system is a laugh. Why not leave it at plain old numbers-sold to determine overall ranking for best-seller. Categories mean bog-all. I only sold 6 copies of Just About Write in the UK - how the hell does that make it a best-seller...

Come on Mr Amazon - you're surely taking the p*** or is it people like Lynn Serafinn who shift the goal-posts to make something out of nothing to make it seem like they are good at their job.

Maybe I'm a little too cynical...

Without Reproach reaches 25 on best seller list

For some reason, the Canadian Amazon store seems to like my book. I checked over the figures this morning and was absolutely amazed to see that Without Reproach had reached number 25 on the Amazon best seller list but had SOLD OUT!

For the second time, Amazon Best Seller.

But damnation. How can it remain an Amazon best seller if there are no books to sell? The USA, the UK, --- there was zilch movement - nada, but Canada - wow!

Temporary best seller.

Okay, I know this best seller thing is only temporary, and it's probably slipping already, but it's been there, done that. By tonight it will most likely slide quietly out of the list and settle into oblivion, so I've taken a screen shot to remember it by.

The last time it had a brief surge, it reached number 50. Now it's 25. How, why? Hey .... do I care, I'm just enjoying the buzz.

Never mind Twilight and Stephenie Meyer, I've actually made the best selling list!

Well I must say, the furore over author, Stephenie Meyer and the latest best selling release in her Twilight series of books (7.5 million and counting) left me quite envious.

The rest of us mortal writers scribble away without gaining anything close to best selling status. We try, we reach out, yet nothing seems to happen until – magically today.

I was feeling a bit dejected over the Meyer affair. I idly scanned my Amazon results to see how I was fairing, and they were bleak, I’ll tell you - UNTIL I checked Canada. For some unknown reason I seem to have MADE it in Canada.

I’m in the best selling list! Admittedly not high (56) but the best selling list is 100 so I’m just about halfway. It isn’t the point though. I AM in the best selling list! I’m officially a best selling author!

I really can’t believe it. I don’t care why; I don’t care how. Thank you all of you lovely Canadians. Thank you for buying WITHOUT REPROACH. Thank you for putting my soul back in place.

Canada – I think I love you.
